Curb Appeal

Your home's facade and surrounding landscaping create a first impression, and if that first impression is a good one, buyers will come from near and far. So, how do you boost your home's curb appeal as fall approaches? Our real estate agents have a few tips to share.

  • Hang New House Numbers
Are your house numbers looking old and faded? Fall is a great time to replace them, especially when you're preparing to sell. Look for house numbers that are large enough to be visible from the street but not so large that they start to feel like a decorative focal point.

In the fall, the sun starts setting earlier and earlier. So, you may have some buyers come to see the house after dark. Make sure your house numbers are well-lit so they can find your home easily. If your light bulbs are out, replace them now.

  • Add More Accent Lights
Another quick way to boost evening curb appeal is by adding more decorative lighting. Or, you could add some solar lights to your landscaping.

Accent lights allow potential buyers to better see what your home's facade looks like if they visit after dark. Plus, extra lights can make your home feel safer and more secure after dark, which is something most buyers desire.

  • Clean Up Your Garden Beds
If you have annual flowers that are dead now, remove them from your garden beds. Now is also a good time to remove any dead branches from shrubs and decorative trees. Pluck old blooms from perennials, and do some general tidying up of the garden beds.

If your garden beds are mulched, consider adding an inch or two of new mulch to the top. This will enhance the garden beds' appearance and also stop so many weeds from popping up next spring.

  • Add Pots of Fall Flowers
If you don't already have fall flowers in your garden beds, it may be too late to plant them. However, it is not too late to place some pots of fall flowers around your garden beds and next to your front door.

  • Power Wash Your Concrete
If you have a concrete walkway, patio, or other surface in front of your home, make sure you power wash it before you list your home. Freshly cleaned concrete will reassure potential buyers that you've cared for the rest of the home, too.

You can also power wash your home's siding if it's looking a bit dirty. Just make sure you don't hit any glass windows!

  • Keep Mowing
Grass grows a lot more slowly in late summer and early fall. However, continuing to mow your lawn every week will knock down any straggly weeds and keep your curb appeal high.

You can also spread a pre-emergent weed killer on your lawn in late fall. This will keep weeds from popping up next spring. Let buyers know this maintenance has already been done.

Follow these tips, and your home will look like a perfect fall dream. Then, contact us when you're ready to look at new Richmond homes for sale or Petersburg homes for sale. We're happy to help.
