Richmond Neighborhoods

With roots extending back to the mid-18th century, Richmond has plenty of historic areas to discover. Our real estate agents always find something new to see when visiting these beautiful historic RVA neighborhoods.

  1. Jackson Ward
Located on the northern side of downtown Richmond, Jackson Ward is often referred to as "Harlem of the South." Organizations such as the JWC Foundation and the Historic Jackon Ward Association are dedicated to nurturing business and artistic talent as well as retaining the district's proud history. Jackson Ward has been home to Maggie Lena Walker, the first female bank president in the United States, as well as iconic entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. A statue of Robinson is one of the district's landmarks, along with the Hippodrome Theater and Ebenezer Baptist Church.

  2. Arts District
Great neighborhoods benefit from thriving business and cultural communities. In order to build on the momentum of Richmond's late-20th century renaissance, the Arts District was created to foster continued growth. The neighborhood was named as an Arts and Culture District Incentive Zone, which includes a number of city-funded programs offering grants to support upgrades to building facades and other improvements. Historic buildings have new life as stylish apartment communities, such as Theater Row Apartments, DECO at CNB, and 326 East. In addition to several galleries and studios, the Arts District is home to Coalition Theater, Ember Music Hall, and other performing arts venues, along with the popular RVA First Fridays art walk.

  3. Manchester
Once an independent city linked to RVA with a bridge spanning the James River, Manchester has become Richmond's fastest-growing residential district. Access to both the downtown waterfront and the James River Parks System makes Manchester an attractive draw to people seeking Richmond homes for sale. Thanks to Manchester Manifest (short for "Manifestival"), every First Friday is a free party from 5 p.m. until midnight. Four blocks of Hull St. are closed off to accommodate food trucks, live music and dancing, games, craft vendors, and kids' activities. Looking for a good workout? Head to the Manchester Climbing Wall, with more than 40 established routes, or the Buttermilk Trail, regarded as one of the more challenging hiking trails in the James River Parks System.

  4. Old Towne Petersburg
Like the legendary phoenix rising from the ashes of its predecessor, Old Towne Petersburg emerged better than ever after an all-consuming fire in 1815. The new district, rebuilt with brick instead of wood, became a thriving hub of the South's manufacturing and transportation industries. Many Petersburg homes for sale represent a rich mix of Italianate, Federal, Greek Revival, Queen Anne, and other classic architectural styles. In fact, the neighborhood's rare "180-degree vista of historic structures" inspired Steven Spielberg to film much of Lincoln in Old Towne Petersburg.

  5. Court End
Court End is home to the state-of-the-art VCU Health System, but many historical and cultural landmarks remain. This district is situated in the northern portion of Richmond. The John Marshall House, built by the "Great Chief Justice" who presided over the Marbury v. Madison decision, is open to the public. The Valentine is a must-see for a collection of stories and artifacts gathered over 125 years of RVA history.
