Richmond Gardens

Thanks to four distinct seasons and legendarily fertile soil, Central Virginia is home to a remarkable number of gardens and arboretums. Brighten your spring with a visit to these spectacular gardens that are located just minutes from Petersburg homes for sale

  • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden - 1800 Lakeside Ave., Richmond, VA 23228
While Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is worth a visit any time of year, this beloved attraction hits its prime during the spring months. From April 1 through June 1, "A Million Blooms" showcases this special time at the Garden. The two-month celebration includes plant shows and sales, art displays, and live music. 2024 marks Lewis Ginter's 40th anniversary, during which the Garden will be expanding and hosting additional special events. "Fidos After 5," when leashed dogs are permitted on the grounds, happens on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily, and admission is $8-$17.

  • Maymont - 1000 Westover Rd., Richmond, VA 23220
The legacy of America's vaunted Gilded Age lives on just minutes from Richmond homes for sale at Maymont. Located on 100 acres overlooking the James River, Maymont was built in 1893 as the home of James and Sallie Dooley. In 1975, nearly a century later, the Maymont Foundation assumed the responsibilities of management, development, and promotion from the City of Richmond. Under the foundation's watch, Maymont has become a stunning exhibit of nature and architecture while retaining the look and feel of the original estate. The grounds feature an arboretum filled with more than 200 species of trees, along with several specialty gardens and a wetland habitat. Maymont is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. 5 p.m. While admission is free, donations are gratefully accepted.

  • Agecroft Hall & Gardens - 4305 Sulgrave Rd., Richmond, VA 23221
Agecroft Hall & Gardens displays the influence of early English settlers on life in the new colonies. The stately manor was transported across the Atlantic Ocean, piece by piece, to be reassembled on the banks of the James River. T.C. Williams, last owner of the estate, included a provision in his will that the property be opened and maintained as a public museum. Motivated by her love of nature, T.C.'s widow Elizabeth designed the grounds in partnership with acclaimed landscape architect Charles Gillette. The terraces, sunken garden, and winding trails create an atmosphere of beauty and serenity. Hours are noon - 5 p.m. daily, and timed admission tickets are $4-$12.

  • Bryan Park - 4308 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, VA 23227
You can find an incredible floral display in the heart of the city at Bryan Park, named for the founder and publisher of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The park's signature attraction is the 17-acre Azalea Garden, site of nearly 450,000 plants representing 50 varieties. A charming fountain pond completes the attractive visual effect. Bryan Park also has tennis and pickleball courts, a playground, an 18-hole disc golf course, and picnic shelters, so you can make a day of it. The park is open daily from 6:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.

  • Poplar Lawn - Petersburg, VA
One of the best opportunities to see Petersburg in bloom is during Historic Garden Week, happening on April 23, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The tour features the Augustus Wright Mansion, the 1856 Ragland Mansion (now a B&B), other private residences, a historic church, and a converted home workshop. The event will also include related activities in the park, weather permitting, and a visit to the Centre Hill mansion, a Garden Club of Virginia restoration site. Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 on the day.
