  In the 1930s, postal worker Gideon A. Strange turned his hobby of raising plants into a part-time business. Gideon sold Strange's Florist in 1947, and it took off from there. With more than 110,00 square feet of indoor space, Strange's is not only one of Virginia's largest greenhouse growers, but it's also one of the largest retail garden centers in the country. The Pea Pod Club uses entertaining activities to instill in kids ages 4-10 an appreciation of gardening and nature.
