Garage Storage Space

Does your new garage have plenty of space for storage? It's so convenient to have a place to store your sporting goods, holiday decorations, outdoor equipment, and other essentials, especially as the weather starts to cool down.

Instead of just storing items haphazardly in your garage, why not find a way to showcase your storage space? We've seen some Richmond homes for sale with truly attractive garage storage spaces. Here are some ideas to inspire you.

  • Tall Shelving Units
Consider having a custom shelving unit built against one of the garage walls. Or, look for a pre-made shelving unit that fits into the space. Such a shelving unit allows you to make better use of the vertical space. You can put items you rarely use on the top shelves and those you use more often closer to the floor.

  • Wall Hooks and Hangers
There are some items frequently stored in garages that have an awkward shape and don't fit well in cabinets. Bikes, scooters, weed whackers, and rakes all fit into this category. If you place several hooks and hangers on the garage wall, you can hang up these items and display them in a tidy way.

  • Tool Kits on a Cart
There are several brands that make spacious, stackable tool kits. These are really meant for storing tools, but you can use them for other items, too. Put your fishing equipment in one, your picture hanging tools in another, and your art supplies in another. You can stack them on a cart, park it in the corner of your garage, and then wheel it out of the way when you need space for projects.

  • Opaque, Open-Top Bins
Another attractive storage option is to place opaque bins on a large shelving unit. Leave the lids off, and label the bins. You can use one for balls, another for shoes, and still another one for garden supplies. With the lids off, you can toss items in quickly. Yet, the opaque color of the containers hides the mess inside.

  • Hang Bikes From the Ceiling
Do you feel like your bikes are always getting in the way, falling over, and being shuffled to the side? Consider mounting a few hooks to the garage ceiling. When you're not using your bike regularly, you can put it up on the hooks, out of the way. If you have lightweight road bikes, it may be easy enough to lift them and store them on the hooks all the time.

  • Drop Bin for Sporting Goods
If someone in your family plays sports or participates in a lot of outdoor activities, they may come home with dirty shoes, wet gloves, and other items that need to be cleaned and cared for before being put away. You can keep these items tidy by designating a drop bin for them in the garage. Put the bin just inside the door so people can put items inside of it as they enter.

Whether you employ one or several of these strategies, they can make your garage a more suitable storage area. If you're still looking for the right home with the perfect garage to store everything you need it to, contact us soon. Our real estate agents can guide you through the home-buying process.
